I am Indian, not a “South Indian “

I lived in many states for quite good time and moved around different states and met many people in the process. I get along with people very well irrespective of their culture & language. But when  people discriminate me saying "southie" i feel really bad. FYI, I am very glad to call myself “an Indian” rather someone calling me a “South Indian”.

I feel so weird when someone points me saying many things and refers me as “South Indian” or Golti”. Excuse me!! I would like to object here…

Firstly, know which all states belong to south India, it’s not just madras. Try to know geography. I can understand your confusion but I don’t tolerate your ignorance.

Yes we are brown & dark skinned, so what?? I guess you are aware of world famous south Indian beauties Vyjantimala, Rekha, Hema Malini, Sridevi, Aishwarya Rai and Vidya Balan. Etc. So, don't generalize and hate everyone.I didn't decide my color neither you.

Yes we eat lot more of rice items like idly, dosa etc and we are experts in eating with our hands even on leaf, There is nothing to feel ashamed of it, please don’t act as if you are born with spoons and forks.

Don’t think all south Indians cannot speak Hindi, off course we have difference in our slang, communication is important rather being numb. So stop pointing out our Hindi. I hope you understand that,we speak our language in  our state and not Hindi.Tell me do you expect people in USA communicate with you in Hindi?

We have our native language influence on English, so what?? even  people from many other states too have that. FYI we are the one who are communicating with world better than many of you.

Don't call us narrow minded & conservative, our thoughts depend on your actions.. be good and we will be good to you.

Don’t call all south Indian movies as D grade movies, some of the best life stories were from South India.

Every person has his/her own perception about the people, places, culture and habits. I/we have no rights to say it right or wrong. After all who are we to judge? But I understand everyone has a opinion.

Don't bring your personal preferences in  here and start discrimination in one aspect or the other. In this century, even country  boundaries are wiped out, why do we just lag behind discriminating each other culture and habits.

P.S: I am not racist at all and i have no discrimination towards anyone, but someone shows off their attitude, i won't spare them.

  2. Hope you did not checked out the movie English Vinglish.

Our society is in such way that discrimination does not needs to be teach by British, its in the blood. No wonder we differentiate on basis of colour, caste, regions, etc.

You reminded me of an incident where one of my friend expected me to under the lingo on another south indian considering that all south indians speak the same language. :)

  3. This is nothing new, for ages to the north Indians we are all just Madrasis, who eat, Idly, Dosa and Sambar( till now they never learnt to say Sambhaar)and rice, and speak ingly pinglay, igate pokacaday. They are really stupid, they are yet to realize we are not all Madrasis, we are quite different, our language, culture and our eating habits too are not the same, we as different as people of Punjab are from the people of MP,Rajasthan,or any other northern states. But we not only know our geography, we know, we are all different, but one as Indian. We have pride in our individual languages, we have always protested against the imposition of Hindi as our Matra Bhasha, although most of us know very good Hindi.
They will never understand us for they live in their own world. Only now they have started to come out of their states, and some smart people have realized what fools they were to think all South Indians were Madrasis.
We can pick up their languages with ease, but can they ever speak any of our languages as well as we can do theirs, I don't think so, unless they have settled in our part of the country for generations.
I am a pukka madrasi in the real sense, and i am also not a racist, but like you i won't keep quiet when provoked.

  4. Hey what the heck? This kind of discrimination is faced only by tamils or telugus and heard of mallus, but Karnatak or Kannadigas never face this kind of issue anywhere in the the country because most of them are lighter skinned than the Northies many a times and speak a better Hindi since times unknown. Truth is Kannadigas or Karnatak pradesh was never of the dravidian or protodravidian family physically or by language as these dirty tamils create stories everywhere and publish. Look at their faces and skulls and look at Karnataka peoples. There are darker skinned as well which is same as anywhere in the north. For your info, most Indians are of brown to lightest wheatish skin colors and no northie is shining white like Ariel as some people maybe hallucinating. It is just that all Indians have proper bone structures and clean features even in the dark complexions but that is not the same with tamils and telugus n mallus as they look primitive. Also people in the east such as Assamese, Orissis and parts of Bengal, Gujrat do have still evolving features and are negroid. The most horrific of all is tamil. A foreigner called only the tamils as dravidians and the tamils felt lonely, so their so called tamil bramins (Ravana's children) started creating stories and called all other States near them as dravidians to hide under somebody elses identity. Their main aim was beautiful Karnataka. Now this is more like, a person who is falling off a building and is about to die, trying to pull in the others along ("a die and let die" policy). This is why you find so many articles and wikilinks showing all the false about the close relations between tamils and Kannads which never existed. Maharashtra however escaped from the clutches of tamils drakulas after Pakistan parted from Indian until which it was in the south. Maharashtra, Karnataka and Goa are a different group of states altogether. Get the facts real!

  6. Same thing goes with you people too when you too don't understand the difference between Eastern, Western and northern part of India and club everyone above Hyderabad as north India and north Indians. Some do by ignorance I can understand but some after clarification also will stick to same and will say 'for us everything above Hyderabad is north. V don't understand east and west since u all have same culture.' This very statement was told by one of my colleague when I cleared him that I am BENGALI and culture, food, our Bengali language, behaviour wise we are totally different from north. In fact geographically too. He told it doesn't matter for us. Than I too opened my mouth saying' than for me too u r MADRASI'. Than he realized and told 'sorry dude but please don't use this word'. I told than same thing applies to you. He replied 'sure. Actually I was just joking'. Hmmm.. after listening madrasi word his comment turned to joke. BULLSHIT
Let me tell you bengali, Assamese n odiya are NOT NORTH INDIANS just like ALL SOUTH INDIANS ARE NOT MADRASIS. The word NORTHIE is as insulting to us as MADRASI for you people. MIND IT. Just like you people we too are very very very proud of our language and literature and we too give first preference to persons behaviour, conduct and decency unlike north for whom royalty is first preference. We too eat with our hands and prefer rice and banana leaf unlike north. We too prefer English rather than hindi. We too feel weird when we are referred as NORTHIE like you people as MADRASI. So next time rectify yourself or else don't get furious listening yourself as MADRASI.
